County Waltz Winners

Twenty- one Teams of ladies enjoyed the wonderful September weather at Costessey Park Golf Club today. For many this was the first opportunity to play the new look course. All teams were named after the very topical theme of Strictly Come Dancing. There was  evidence of this  in some unusual additions to the  golfing  attire. Take a look in the gallery.

Jo Barnard, Mary Tuddenham, Philly Bond and Fran Johnson, the team from Bawburgh were the worthy winners with a score of 97 points.   See Results page for all winners.

Success for Abigail O’Riordan and Sian Fenn-Green in the County Foursomes

71 points from 36 holes was a winning score for Sian and Abigail on Thursday 14th September at Swaffham Golf Club.

It was an early start and the weather did not look promising. With just a few ladies braving the cooler temperatures, many lined up to tee off in wet weather gear and winter warmers. In Foursomes, the golfers play alternate shots, so they both need too be on form if they are to come in with a good score.

After the first round, more than 60 ladies taking part were glad to come into the warm for sandwiches and tea (maybe even something a little stronger). “Not a good start…… could have gone better……..didn’t score until the third hole” were just some of the comments. No one, including the winners, Sian and Abigail, was happy with the score.

And then the sun came out. As they came to the tee for the second round, it was all smiles and laughter. Despite a quick shower, most teams were dry when they arrived back at the clubhouse, and many stayed to enjoy tea and cake and congratulate the winners.

National Success for Norfolk’s Lady Golfers

PING Finalists Libby & Rita

Fifth Place for Great Yarmouth & Caister Ladies’ pair, Libby Sturrock & Rita Bleasdale, in the Grand Final of the PING women’s Fourball Better Ball at Gainsborough Golf Club.

Libby and Rita achieved a fabulous 49 points to earn their place in the top fifty pairs who go forward to the Grand Final.

Playing off 90% of their handicaps – Libby had 30 shots, Rita 15 – the pair was three under par after the first three holes, leading to a front nine score of 20 points, a number they matched on the back nine. The pair clocked up their 40 points during a rain-soaked round at the challenging 5,864 yard Karsten Lakes Course, leaving them just two shots behind the winners. They were tied with another pair on 40 but on countback came in fifth.

“It was a fantastic event, unlike anything I have experienced in golf,” said Libby, a relatively new golfer. Playing partner, Rita, agreed: “We had a few poor holes but somehow or other managed to hold it together. When I was in a muddle, Libby came through.”

The tournament is run by England Golf and attracted 16,610 women from 885 clubs. Full details and hole by hole results are on the England Golf website.
